In a paper for International Association of Universities (IAU Horizons), we argue that the current knowledge in the Global Science Commons is far inside the knowledge frontier required to create a sustainable operating space for humanity.
Three recommendations are made to enhance FAIR Open Knowledge in a Global Commons, with the potential to be used in a continuum of SDG Education in lifelong learning to achieve SDG4, target 7(Mission 4.7).
- Knowledge for use in Education is not always stored in an open manner that meet FAIR principles (findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability – explicit data‑capable open license.) Nor is content oriented to the SDGs. FAIR Open Educational Resource Repositories (OERRs) for the SDGs needs to be embedded in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and related agencies as a norm.
- SDG knowledge for quality education/training at all levels needs to be available for all stakeholders across all nations. Stakeholders, particularly universities, need to take advantage of the digital innovation and platforms available in libraries in most countries, which can host Open, FAIR and Quality content for SDG Education.
- HEIs and their networks need to be supported by governments, donor agencies and institutions worldwide to focus on creating FAIR Open Educational Resource Repositories (OERRs) for the SDGs that feed into SDG Education and Training Programs. (such as Teacher Training, ESG Training and Masters programs)
We do have organizations committed to this mission, including members of SDG Academy, Mission 4.7, UN Headquarters’ Library (Libraries network) OER Dynamic Coalition, UNESCO and IFLA.
Multi-stakeholder partnerships, led by libraries, can harness the power of FAIR Open Educational Resource Repositories (OERRs) for the SDGs to create the global knowledge commons needed to allow all people be educated and trained to implement the SDGs in any corner of the planet.
Note: Open Educational Resource Repositories (OERRs), is an online storage system that allows educators to share, manage and use education resources. Repositories can contain a collection of learning items that support instruction, including: open textbooks, lesson plans, quizzes and test banks, videos, animations, simulations, class handouts, interactive activities and tools (apps, for instance), power point presentations
